Yes, it’s absolutely true. No cost. No credit card entry. No “try it free for a week and then pay $$$ after that.” It’s just free.

I did it.

This is me, Don Herman

After I retired several years ago, I was getting a bit bored. Yes, my partner and I travel frequently, and I love puttering in the kitchen, but those 40 hours a week started getting hard to fill, and I was looking for something else to do.

Computers have always intrigued me. I’m old enough to remember when the first LED calculators came out! I first started working on the good old Radio Shack TRS-80, programming PONG! And I worked with computers through my entire career. Naturally, using a computer to do something creative came to mind quickly.

But what? I kept searching and seeing ads for “Create your own website!” But I had no idea how websites worked. Not a clue. So I kept passing them by.

Until one day when I came across this ad:

I’ll admit, what got me was the “no credit card required.” Some of the other programs I’d glanced at required not only a credit card, but an up-front payment of some kind. No thanks. Wealthy Affiliate, however, seemed different – so I went ahead and clicked on it.

I created a login and was immediately directed to a 5-phase, 50-step program that promised to have me up and running my own free, live website by the end of the training. So away I went.

What I Found

After the first three lessons, I understood some of the basics behind how websites work (much of the mystery vanished). I understood some of the ways you can make money online (also helpful). And I was guided, step-by-step, through creating my own special niche topic and website name. At the end of that third lesson, my site had it’s own web address and I could actually see it online, in all its glory!

Ok, so it didn’t have much in it, but I felt pretty excited! And I was only three lessons in!

The rest of the lessons put some meat on the bones, so to speak. I learned how to find topics to write about – topics that people were looking for, but were having trouble finding on the web.

I learned how to apply and be accepted to affiliate marketing corporations like Share-a-Sale, Amazon and Rakuten. And I learned about companies that will pay you just for displaying their advertising on your site. Perfect! Now I could advertise on my site, pulling in a little cash just for providing my readers with good content.

And speaking of content, I learned how to write engaging content that people wanted to read. After just a few days, I’d posted my first recipe on www.bakingnaturally.org, and I started seeing traffic from far-flung locations across the country. Amazing.

Oh, But We’re Just Getting Started.

Now that I had a site, and knew how to fill it with engaging content, I learned how to direct people to it. I’d been on Facebook for years, but I’d never explored the business side of it. Once I did, I found that a single post on Facebook could direct hundreds of people to my website. And since then, that social engagement has grown to include Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn and YouTube.

After the first week, I knew that this was the part-time gig I had been looking for in my retirement. It was fun, I could work on it whenever I wanted, and the possibilities were endless.

Still Not Convinced? I Get It . . .

It took me some time to think about it as well. And I’d been scared off a few times by other programs that promised instant wealth. But I’m glad I came around.

Working on my website in my post-retirement years has helped me build something I’m very proud of. I reach hundreds of thousands of people every week through three active websites: Baking Naturally, Cowboy Concierge, and this one. Check them out – everything I learned about building websites and internet marketing, I learned through Wealthy Affiliate and through subsequent research on my own.

How much did I make? Well, I supplemented my retirement income enough last year to pay for a full two-week river cruise in Europe! And that’s only working on it a few months out of the year. If you devote more time, you could make even more.

I’ll leave you with this: Internet Marketing is hard work. But that’s why you need all the support you can get – especially when you’re getting started. Just learning all the terminology can be a chore!
